1. The fundamentals — why this matters
Chapter 1 of 6 · 4 min
Volume profiles and VPOC are not just technical indicators, but mirror the underlying strength and intentions of the institutional market.
Volume profiles are a visual representation of trading volume at each price level over a given time period. By mapping where the price has traded the most, it reveals the price levels where the market has built up the greatest 'acceptance' or 'resistance'. This is crucial because institutional players, who often drive the largest price movements, leave their footprints in the volume data.
High volume at a specific price level indicates an intense battle between buyers and sellers, and the level becomes an important reference point for future market behavior.
VPOC (Volume Point of Control) is the most critical component of the volume profile. It is the specific price level that has handled the absolute highest volume during the analyzed period. VPOC represents the 'center of gravity' where the market on average agreed on a value, and it acts as a magnet for the price.
The price tends to be drawn back to this level, because it gathers the most concentrated trading activity and thereby the greatest market memory.
